Teresa Torres, Vice President of Products at AfterCollege, Identifies Best Practices To Ensure That User Stories Communicate The "Why" Behind The Requirement
Product managers share customer knowledge with engineers via the user story. The goal is to write stories that facilitate a conversation between the business and engineering, that allow the team to estimate the work so that they can be prioritized, and such that the right product gets built. Historically (let’s say before the internet), product teams wrote Product Requirement Documents (PRDs) - long documents that outlined every nook and cranny of a product. Some teams still work this way. But many have moved to writing product requirements in the form of user stories. The unique advantage of user stories over PRDs is that they don’t just communicate to engineers what they should build, they communicate why. This discussion will focus on the necessity of writing user stories that communicate information about the actor, explain the desired action, and the benefit to the user so engineers can implement each story without losing sight of the content of why they are building what they are building.
Teresa Torres, Vice President of Products, will speak at the weekly Global Product Management Talk on Monday, October 15, 2012 at the simultaneous times of 11:00 AM Pacific Time, 1:00 PM CST Chicago, and 2:00 PM EST New York.
